If you read my last post (read it here!) you will know that I have recently converted to the Paleo diet. So far, it's going pretty well, although there have been a few tricky moments (more to come on this in a future blog post). But one thing is for sure; the way that we cook food at home has changed massively. Being 'foodies', my boyfriend and I together have quite a collection of kitchen appliances and gadgets, some would say far too many. But since eating Paleo and therefore having to come up with many more creative ways of preparing food, I feel like we are finally starting to make real use of our kitchen, and getting the true potential out of the equipment that we have.
This has got me looking around at my kitchen and thinking; what could I really not do without? What has proved MOST useful? Here are my top 5 picks for the best kitchen gadgets that I own. I hope it inspires your cooking!
1. Spiraliser
I absolutely love my spiraliser. Giving up spaghetti was one aspect of Paleo that I knew I was going to struggle with, because I love it so much. But with the spiraliser I can make vegetable spaghetti, for example, courgetti! With a nice tomato and garlic sauce, it really isn't much different from the real thing. This particular spiraliser also comes with some other attachments; you can make noodles, thinner wafes or chips from potatoes. It definitely is fun to experiemnt with and makes eating vegetables much more exciting!
2. Rice Cooker
Although I have had to give up rice and grains as part of my new diet, I had to mention this rice cooker because I have had it for years and it makes cooking SO easy and fast. It doens't just make rice either; it comes with a tray so that you can also steam vegetables or meat in there too. I have sometimes made entire meals, just shoving everything in the rice cooker and relaxing for 20 minutes until it's cooked. I definitely recommend getting one of these if you haven't already got one!
3. Coffee Bean Grinder
If you are a coffee addict like me then one of these is definitely an essential for your kitchen. I also have a coffee machine for when I am in a rush and don't have time to make the real thing. But honestly, nothing compares to the coffee made from freshly ground beans...
4. Pineapple Corer
When I invested in one of these, I really wasn't sure how much use we would realistically get out of it. But it has really surprised me! It has inspired me to buy pineapple a lot more often, and it only takes about 10 seconds to get all the juicy flesh out of the pineapple shell. Pineapple is such a great fruit because it can be used in sweet or savory dishes, and you could even make a nice pina colada to go in the leftover shell! Plus, the corer is so cheap to buy, only a couple of euros - totally worth it.
5. Salad Spinner
Say goodbye to soggy lettuce leaves. A salad spinner is just the best tool for becautiful, crisp and clean lettuce for your salads. I have also washed spinnach in there too and it came out beautifully. Again, this gadget is so cheap, it's a definite must-have.
Honarable mention goes to...
Although it didn't quite make the top 5, I just had to mention my juicer. It's probably not something that I use that often, although I do go in phases with it, but it makes the most delicious and fresh juices. I also really like the fact that you can get as crazy as you like with your own juice, just add whatever you think would work well! I particularly like to make my own carrot, apple and ginger juice.
